Health Impact Of Economic Change Among New Grants
Health Impact Of Economic Change Among Major New Grants
A major national study that relates death to socio-economic status over the last 20 years is one of 97 new project and smaller grants worth almost $28 million, funded by the HRC and released today.
Other national projects will study youth drinking, hospital restructuring, Maori use of alcohol, work-related motor vehicle deaths and adolescent health. International projects will study childhood asthma and cellphone health risks in New Zealand and other countries, as well as cardiovascular disease in Asia and the Pacific.
The $829,000 New Zealand Census-Mortality Study, led by Dr Tony Blakely at the Wellington School of Medicine, is one of the largest such projects in the world. It will enable factors like unemployment, income, education, occupation, smoking and many other socio-economic factors to be related to mortality in ways that will have many implications for future government policy.
The study will enable researchers to determine, among many other questions, whether - * Being unemployed increases a person's risk of suicide; * Income is related to death rates among middle to low-income people; * New Zealand's radical macro-economic changes in the last 20 years have affected health inequalities * The reduction in road traffic crash deaths over the last 20 years has been evenly shared by people of different socio-economic status.
The use of census data from 1981 to 1996 will give a picture of the way in which major changes in New Zealand society have impacted on mortality, says Dr Blakely: "It's an internationally unique natural experiment".
The study will also provide information about inconsistencies of ethnic classification between census and mortality data
