Growth for March quarter vehicle registrations

Safety Authority has reported continued growth in the number
of new vehicles and used imports registered within New
Zealand throughout the first quarter of 2000.
New car registrations, at 15,012, show an 8.8 per cent increase in the March quarter compared to the same period last year, according to figures released today by the LTSA. New commercial vehicles recorded a 25.2 percent increase to 4,023 registrations for the same period.
During March 2000, a total of 7,391 cars and commercial vehicles were registered as ‘new’ compared to 6,903 in March of last year.
Of the 5,728 new cars registered, Toyota led the way with 884 (15.4 per cent of the market), Nissan was in second place with 794 new cars registered (13.9 per cent), followed by Ford with 761 (13.3 per cent) and Holden with 711 (12.4 per cent).
The Holden Commodore continues to lead as the most popular new car registered (432), followed by the Ford Falcon (392) and Toyota Camry (282).
Amongst 1,663 new commercial vehicles registered, Toyota led the way with 399 (a market share of 24 per cent) followed by Ford with 387 (23.3 per cent), Nissan with 243 (14.6 per cent) and Mitsubishi with 209 (12.6 per cent).
The top three commercial vehicles registered during March were the Toyota Hilux (217), closely followed by the Ford Courier (214) and Nissan Navara (206).
Total car registrations for March of
16,936 (including used imports) showed a 2.1 per cent
increase over March 1999, while registrations of commercial
vehicles increased by 7.7 per cent to 2,409 (including used
imports) over March last
year.
