LTSA offers road code reminder

LTSA online
Concern about the number of crashes happening at intersections has led to a new information initiative from the Land Transport Safety Authority called Code Red.

Statistics show that nearly a quarter of all injury crashes on urban roads happen at intersections, says LTSA spokesperson Craig Dowling.

“Some of these crashes are related to excessive speed, some to alcohol and some to a combination of the two, however it is clear that drivers also make mistakes simply because they don’t understand the road code,” Mr Dowling said.

Issue one of Code Red offers drivers a reminder of the road rules as they apply to intersections. The two-page information sheet will be distributed to media and the public via regional road safety co-ordinators. It will also be featured on the LTSA’s website: www.ltsa.govt.nz.

“It is hoped that the road code reminders will be posted on community noticeboards, and be reprinted in community newsletters and newspapers. The more widely read the better.”

A different road code topic will be chosen each month with the aim of broadening motorists’ knowledge and awareness of road code issues.

“Rules change and develop over the years while at the same time drivers can get complacent. That is a recipe for problems. Code Red will serve as a gentle reminder to drivers of the need to keep their road code knowledge up to date.”
