Travel Advisory: Indonesia

Although Indonesia is generally more settled following the Presidential elections, security concerns remain in some provinces.

We advise against travel to East Timor, which is still recovering from the devastation to its towns; to West Timor and adjacent islands, where there is still a large refugee presence and the threat of militia activity; and to Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra.

New Zealanders should also consider deferring non-essential travel to Ambon and the nearby islands in Maluku Province: to East Kalimantan, particularly Balikpapan; to Irian Jaya, where there is an active separatist movement and to Lombok following recent rioting and religious clashes.

Jakarta is calm. Tourist services are operating normally in Bali.

The deployment of the UN backed multinational force in East Timor has given rise to widespread anti-Western sentiment throughout Indonesia. Some countries contributing to the UN operation, including New Zealand, could be the target of hostilities. So far, however, New Zealand interests have not been affected.

We advise travellers to keep a low profile and avoid any behaviour that might offend local sensitivities. New Zealanders should keep themselves informed by monitoring the news for developments that might affect their safety.

The difficult economic situation in Indonesia has led to an increase in robberies and crime generally. Travellers should take precautions both where they are staying and when moving around. Avoid demonstrations and large crowds. Hire taxis only from reputable firms, either by phone or from stands at major hotels, rather than hailing them in the street; avoid travelling alone at night; and be vigilant of pick pockets.
