Victoria's summer programme attracts record interest

Course organisers are extremely pleased with the record numbers enrolled in Victoria University's summer programme, which began earlier this month.

The university is offering its biggest range of subjects ever over the November 1999 and February 2000 summer trimester - up from 17 last year to 47, 44 of which are credit-bearing papers, ranging from first year to masters level.

Summer Programme spokesperson Shona de Sain says the heavy interest is due to the range and variety of papers being offered, though pressure on students to finish their degrees as quickly as possible in order to join the work force is also a contributing factor.

"The flexibility of the programme enables people to work, take a summer break and yet still be able to begin or continue a university career and up-skill" she says.

Around 1,500 students are currently enrolled in summer papers and applications are still coming in. Papers starting in December and January still have places available, including education, music, Maori, Latin and maths. Papers offered by the Faculty of Commerce and Administration including accounting, marketing and information management all begin in January.
