ECE Services Welcomes Approval Of Regulatory Review Recommendations

Advocates for Early Learning Excellence, representing nation-wide ECE providers, welcomes Minister Seymour’s announcement that the reforms to its regulatory environment have been approved by Cabinet.

Director, Kelly Seaburg, who is also an owner/operator of ECE services, says “the recommendations should bring clearer regulations, improved transparency, a stronger and more mature working relationships with regulators to ensure that the necessary regulations directly relate to safety and quality outcomes for tamariki.”

“ECE managers and teachers have been confused by conflicting regulations, tied up with overburdensome paperwork and moving goal posts, which has taken time, resources and quality interactions away from children’s learning.”

“Having clear, robust regulations with a mature regulator will give parents a greater level of confidence in our sector and what it is delivering for their whanau.”

“We want our most senior and experienced teachers driving out our world-class ECE curriculum instead of being tied to their desks under mountains of administration and paperwork. The system reached a tipping point where it reduced quality by burning out teachers and there has been too much focus on ticking boxes and grappling with confusing regulations instead of quality teaching of our future generations.”

“The upcoming challenge is to ensure the revised regulations are fit for purpose to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing while providing an enabling environment for our teachers to be their very best.”

“Quality ECE services encourage strong regulation and welcomes regulators that hold all services to a high standard. Those standards must be clear and consistently applied so the challenge is not just in how the regulations are written, but how they are enforced” says Mrs Seaburg.
