Money Week will take place at the University of Auckland this week to help students sharpen their financial literacy and
money management skills.
“The idea behind money week is to encourage students to be more proactive in the management of their finances, while
also making them aware of the support that is available should they find themselves in financial difficulty,” says
Student Engagement Manager Louise Jackson.
“We want to equip students with good financial habits as they head into the academic year and hopefully before they get
into any money troubles.”
The University is partnering with AUSA and student group SavY to deliver a week of finance-focused free events,
including sessions on financial literacy; opportunities for students to share money-saving tips; and a casual employer
exhibition.
“We recognise that a large number of students require a part-time job to support their studies, so we’re inviting casual
employers onto campus for a mini-exhibition,” Louise adds.
Two independent financial wellbeing specialists will be available at drop-in clinics for students concerned about their
financial situation or looking for support in preparing a budget.
Student group SavY will share their practical money saving expertise via a pop-up hub appearing in various locations
across campus throughout the week.
SavY are University students who aim to promote good financial habits in all youth, and run free financial literacy
workshops in secondary schools.
For those students who do find themselves in financial difficulty, special funding may be available through the
University’s Student Emergency and Wellbeing Fund or the AUSA (Auckland University Student Association) Welfare Hardship
Grants scheme.
AUSA also provides food parcels, and is always seeking donations of non-perishable food items for this popular service.
AUSA will be collecting for the food bank during Money Week. Donations can be left at AUSA House on Alfred Street.
Money Week will be held between 25 and 29 March.
