AKO AOTEAROA LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAMME OF ADULT LITERACY, NUMERACY AND CULTURAL CAPABILITY COURSES
This year, Ako Aotearoa will run a series of new Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Cultural Capability (ALNACC) courses for
foundation-level educators and practitioners throughout the New Zealand tertiary education system. The first course
starts in April.
“We are committed to raising adult literacy, numeracy and cultural capability skills for all New Zealanders. Our
dedicated team has worked tirelessly to develop this range of new evidence-based courses and we look forward to sharing
them with you all,” says Ako Aotearoa Project Lead Annette van Lamoen.
The new course options include: Reading difficulties, Numeracy toolbox, Enhancing Māori Cultural Capability, Pacific
Cultural Centeredness Pathway, and much more.
The new ALNACC professional learning and development (PLD) uses a ‘kono’ metaphor drawn from te ao Māori or the Māori
world. It refers to a small woven harakeke basket used for gift offerings. In this context, the kono represents a PLD
package consisting of several 4-week courses at a range of skills levels, which align with Tapatoru, our new Foundation
Learning Professional Standards Framework.
After taking part in the recent ALNACC PLD taster workshops on literacy, numeracy and cultural capability, participants
said they are looking forward to Tapatoru frameworks further integration into the sector. Others took away unique
insights into numeracy, reading comprehension, spelling and Māori language from the taster sessions.
