National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards

Ako Aotearoa believes that teaching and learning of the highest quality is evidenced daily in organisations right cross our tertiary sector.

To reflect that, the 2019 round of the National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards is going through its greatest change since 2002. Ako Aotearoa is committed to deliver a national awards initiative that recognises excellent teaching and training wherever it occurs across our tertiary system.

After a stringent review process, changes to the criteria allow flexibility in what teaching excellence may look like, whatever the teaching and learning context. Two categories apply, General or Kaupapa Māori. There is also an endorsement for supporting Pacific learners as an additional recognition available for a nomination under either category. For the first time ever, nominees can submit all or part of their portfolio in multimedia, i.e. video or audio format.

The aim is to attract more nominations from teachers, trainers and tutors working throughout New Zealand in Wānanga, Adult & Community Education, Industry Training Organisations, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics, Other Tertiary Education Providers and Private Training Establishments, as well as the Universities.

Ako Aotearoa invites chief executives, leaders and managers to nominate, encourage and support their very best members of staff or teams involved in teaching and/or training to get nominated.

Helen Lomax, Ako Aotearoa Director says, “If you have a tutor, teacher or team that delivers consistently high quality teaching and learning that matches the TTEA criteria, please nominate them so they have the opportunity to receive national recognition. The stakes are high – each successful awardee takes away $20,000 (there are up to 12 awards each year) and the benefits can flow through a team, department, organisation and beyond.”

Nominations

As part of the nomination process, teachers, educators and tutors can develop their own portfolio, or others can prepare a portfolio on a colleague’s behalf. Ako Aotearoa can advise you about people who can help.
