A great choice for a quality tertiary education, providing a wide range of subjects and qualifications, the Southern
Institute of Technology (SIT) continues to show growth in student enrolments again in 2019. Overall domestic student
numbers are up by 15 percent, with strong growth of around 2164 students at their Invercargill campus alone.
Invercargill’s Trades facility is the most popular with top programmes including, the NZ Certificate in Animal
Technology (Level 5), NZ Certificate in Automotive Engineering, and New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4).
Trades currently has 310 equivalent full-time students (EFTS), which is a 16 percent increase when compared to 2018
data. This converts to 581 students studying at the local campus.
SIT2LRN Distance Learning has continued with its year-on-year growth and is up by 6 per cent compared to last year with
788 EFTS, which is made up of just under 2400 students.
An impressive figure, SIT2LRN is a popular option for students wanting to upskill, but who are unable to attend
on-campus classes. Top programmes for 2019 include; the NZ Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety Management (Level 6),
the NZ Diploma in Business, and the NZ Diploma in Photography (Level 5).
SIT’s Chief Executive Penny Simmonds is delighted with this growth. “The increase in enrolments at SIT signals how
important our Zero Fees Scheme is. We are helping many thousands of students gain a high quality tertiary education,
with little or no debt, that places them well ahead of competition as they are work-ready on graduation. We only hope
