Free Workshops to Prepare Teachers for Digital Technologies in the NZ Curriculum

In just 12 months, all schools and kura must implement the new Digital Technology areas of the NZ Curriculum. This ultimately means literacy, numeracy and now digital fluency will be the standards of educational success for New Zealand children.

While most teachers are focussed on the work at hand with the start of the new school year, it is paramount they get support for this fundamental change in next year’s school system.

The Mind Lab is hosting free workshops nationwide to introduce their postgraduate qualifications to support and help teachers develop their understanding of the Digital Technology learning areas of the new curriculum.

The workshops offer a hands-on practical experience of transformative teaching practice in addressing digital technologies progress outcomes.

National Postgraduate Director at The Mind Lab, Dr David Parsons, says this is an exciting time for education in New Zealand. “While we may view ourselves as a country at the forefront of innovation, the recent OECD report ‘Measuring Innovation in Education 2019’ suggests that New Zealand is actually behind by world standards in terms of ICT innovation in schools, so it is great that we are now catching up.

“Education needs to help students to develop not just technology skills but personal and social skills too. This change to our curriculum, which embeds technology across all learning areas, means our children will be far more prepared for success in the digital world.”

The new Digital Technologies Technology Areas,“Computational Thinking" and "Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes", need to be integrated into the curriculum for all New Zealand students from year 1 - 10 for 2020.

These workshops are intended to showcase The Mind Lab’s Postgraduate Certificate in Digital and Collaborative Learning, designed to develop capabilities and skills in response to a new generation of highly digital students and the integration of Digital Technologies into the New Zealand curriculum, as well as providing an opportunity for teachers to develop their leadership, research-informed teaching and reflective practice in a collaborative environment. The Certificate also provides a pathway to the Master of Contemporary Education.

Since 2014 over 4500 teachers have completed this highly impactful qualification, to help them to transform their teaching practice and guide their students through learning in a digital age.
