Wintec students to get 30% off bus travel from 2019

Published: Tue 4 Dec 2018 08:42 AM
The discount will apply to BUSIT card rates in Hamilton and across the Waikato region at all times of the day and week.
Wintec Director of Infrastructure and Assets, Graeme Ward says that student feedback has helped drive the decision to make bus travel more affordable.
“Wintec students have made it clear they want subsidised bus travel, and giving them the best possible study experience is important to us at Wintec,” says Ward.
“While making it more cost-effective for them to travel here is important, we hope the discount will encourage more students to take public transport and help us manage the demand for parking, particularly at our central city campus.”
From 1 January 2019, a Wintec student on a Hamilton bus will pay just $1.70 one way – down from a $3.30 adult cash fare and 30% less than a $2.40 adult BUSIT card rate.
“It’s a win-win for many of our students, a boost to the region’s public transport network and a positive shift to help reduce the number of vehicles in Hamilton’s CBD,” says Ward.
Wintec staff will also receive the bus subsidy.
Wintec students and staff travelling on Waikato Regional Council managed buses will need to show a current Wintec ID and must have a BUSIT card to receive discounted travel. They will be able to take advantage of 24 bus services in Hamilton and 12 regional services across the Waikato.
