Whānau, family and teachers are helping students get ready for this year’s NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship exams, which
begin next week on Wednesday 7 November.
NZQA Deputy Chief Executive Kristine Kilkelly says around 140,000 students are preparing for 120 exam sessions this
year. Of these, approximately 8,000 students will be sitting NCEA exams online.
“Our recent evaluation shows that nearly all survey responses from students, who have taken part in a digital exam, preferred an online exam
rather than written exams. This is reflected in participation in this year’s NCEA exams online, with a 60 percent
increase in participation compared to 2017”
“Since 2014, almost three quarters of New Zealand secondary schools and around 30,000 students have experienced at least
one digital examination. Fifty-two schools are planning to participate in Digital Pilot examinations in 2018, which are
available at NCEA Levels 1-3 in English, Media Studies and Classical Studies.”
NZQA aims to have NCEA examinations available online for 14 subjects at Levels 1-3 in 2019. The range of subjects will
be further expanded in 2020 and beyond.
