Beyond discrimination; towards inclusion – major lecture series
A Nobel Laureate and New Zealand’s Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner are among the speakers in a major public lecture series being held at the University of Auckland and which will address some of the major social and cultural issues of our time including concerns over increasing social division and inequality.

This series of four one-hour lectures looks at a wide range of issues such as supporting diversity, how to mitigate implicit bias, how New Zealand can embrace its Pacific identity and, in the final lecture, Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt discusses how men as champions of change to promote inclusivity in the field of science.
Dr Jackie Blue, a former GP and now Equal Employment Opportunities delivers the first lecture on 27 September, Diversity, leadership and power, and will talk about the ‘diversity dividend’ and how increasing diversity in management and leadership builds culture and productivity.
On 3 October, Associate Professor Damon Selesa, Director of Pacific Strategy and Engagement at the University of Auckland, looks at New Zealand’s Pacific Futures and how New Zealand can move towards embracing its Pacific identity.
The third lecture, on 10 October from Associate Professor Carla Houkamau, Associate Dean for Maori and Pacific Development at the University of Auckland’s Business School, is titled Implicit Bias – perils and potential, and considers how – and how far – we might mitigate our biases.
The final lecture on 16 October, Being an ally – male champions of change, on 16 October will be delivered by Professor Brian Schmidt, winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics and who heads the Science in Australia Gender Equity programme. He is a vocal supporter of diversity in science and academia and will talk about what male champions of change can do to promote inclusivity.
