Microsoft supports inspiring New Zealand teachers at country’s first technology educator hui

New Zealand teachers driving digital transformation in education

New Zealand, 12 July 2018 – Microsoft is thrilled to announce the inaugural Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert Hui 2018, to be held this weekend (14-15 July). The hui will bring together teachers from across New Zealand for a weekend of professional learning, collaboration and networking.

The hui, to be held at Microsoft House in Auckland, brings together New Zealand MIE Experts – a group of teachers selected by Microsoft each year for using technology in innovative ways to improve student outcomes across the curriculum and help them succeed in a digital world.

Attendees can learn from a number of experts during immersive sessions. These are designed to share how different tools can be used in the classroom to teach concepts like computational thinking and creativity.

“At Microsoft we aim to empower every person and organisation to achieve more, and hosting this hui contributes to this vision. Teachers are helping to inspire the students of today to create the world of tomorrow. Together they are having a real impact by providing better learning outcomes for their students, powered by the Microsoft Cloud,” Anne Taylor, Education Manager for Microsoft New Zealand.

One of the prime benefits of being a MIE Expert is joining a global community of like-minded individuals who are equally passionate about using technology to improve the classroom experience. The network of 60+ teachers from around New Zealand, ranges from small rural primary schools to large urban high schools.

“With the new national curriculum prescribing the use of technology from age five up, across almost all subjects, we need to provide opportunities to upskill our teachers and give them confidence in the digital environment,” says Taylor.

MIE Experts help Microsoft to lead innovation in education, advocating and sharing their thoughts on effective use of technology with peers and policy makers.

“Designed by teachers, for teachers, the hui will be an amazing experience for everyone who attends. What I love about these teachers is that they bring a growth mindset to everything that they do. They’ve organised this hui, whilst continuing to teach our children, and believe in the concepts of sharing and collaboration,” says Taylor.

The weekend will be interactive and includes keynote speakers from the US and Australia. Every presenter is a teacher and passionate about their area of expertise.
