Exploring what it is to be a global citizen
A dynamic range of speakers at this week’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Conference will guide community educators towards a greater understanding of how community learning can help New Zealanders become global citizens.
Professor James Liu from Massey University will share his knowledge of history and identity, and discuss the impact of technology on human consciousness, while human rights advocate and citizenship educator, Nelida Cespedes Rossel from Peru will share insights from Latin America. Veronica Tawhai, recent recipient of the Fullbright – Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga Scholar Award will talk about the role of citizenship education in transforming indigenous-coloniser relations.
The workshop programme will explore topics such as supporting adults with dyslexia and other learning differences to achieve in tertiary education and the workplace, developing Maori students’ soft skills to support achievement, simplifying embedded literacy and numeracy for tertiary tutors and marketing ACE organisations on a shoestring.
Conference participants will also have opportunities to hear updates on adult education in the Asia Pacific Region, and from Minister of Education Hon Chris Hipkins. The ACE Aotearoa Annual Awards will be presented at the conference dinner.
The ACE Conference will be held at Te Wharewaka o Pōneke, June 13-15.
