Education Minister considering options for Marlborough Colleges

Mayor John Leggett hosted Education Minister Chris Hipkins on his visit to Blenheim this afternoon where he was taken on a tour of Marlborough Boys' and Marlborough Girl's Colleges.

Mayor Leggett said it was great to have the Minister visit our community to see first-hand our current secondary school facilities. It was also very encouraging to hear from the Minister that he is looking to progress secondary education in Marlborough without delay, and that the Ministry of Education is considering all possible options for co-location.

“Council will continue to play a strategic planning role in the Ministry’s future discussions and proposals - I'm confident we have value to add,” Mayor Leggett said.

During his visit Minister Hipkins was shown a number of sites around Blenheim that Council has identified as possible locations for the combined college.

“There is no doubt at all that we need this investment in our secondary education facilities and that Marlborough deserves it. As everyone knows, some of our college buildings and facilities are well past their best.

“As we have done previously, Council will continue to offer its resources and expertise to the Ministry of Education and provide assistance to them with regards to property options in Marlborough. It is important to remember however that the final say on the future of a combined college for Marlborough lies firmly with central Government.”
