Auckland’s Unitec Institute of Technology Opens a Free4U Computing Classroom in Birkenhead
Unitec has launched a Free4U Computing Classroom in Birkenhead on Auckland’s North Shore.
Located in the heart of Birkenhead Avenue’s retail district, the Free4U classroom offers free introductory (Level 1) self-directed computing courses for the community. The courses give participants the opportunity to develop computer skills and are targeted at those who are new to computers, want to up-skill for job opportunities, pursue further study or for personal interest.
Courses include Getting Started in Computing, Keyboarding, Internet and Email, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and Access, and cover everything from file management, adding attachments and opening them, formatting, presentation design, email etiquette and how to use a search engine. Some of these courses will be available online in the near future.
Free4U is part of the Unitec Bridgepoint Network which offers a range of part-time and short courses across a range of pathways. Previously Free4U has had classrooms in Takapuna and Albany. For more than a decade Unitec has also run a classroom at its Waitakere Campus in Henderson which has a strong community focus.
Free4U team leader Ash Bennett says that Free4U provides a valuable service to the local community, encouraging and empowering people to learn new skills or brush up on existing knowledge in preparation for job opportunities or further study.
Free4U Birkenhead offers four sessions Monday-Thursday between 9.00am and 3.30pm, three sessions on a Friday between 9.00am and 2.00pm and two sessions on Saturday mornings between 9.00am and 12.00pm. Courses are run all year round apart from over the Christmas break and public holidays.
