Auckland leads on international education conference 2021
More than 2,000 international educators from around the world will be listening and learning in Auckland in 2021 at the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) conference hosted by the University of Auckland.
More than 2,000 international educators from around the world will be listening and learning in Auckland in 2021 at the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) conference hosted by the University of Auckland.
This is the first year the annual conference will be held in New Zealand. The successful bid is the result of a whole-of-New Zealand collaboration, with the University of Auckland’s submission strongly supported by the Government, Minister for Education, ENZ, ATEED, Auckland Convention Bureau, and Trade New Zealand. Auckland is the primary host, the country’s seven universities will co-host.
University of Auckland Vice-Chancellor (and current Chair of Universities New Zealand), Professor Stuart McCutcheon said the theme - “Innovation for sustainable futures” is highly appropriate given the rapid changes being experienced in every facet of peoples’ lives.
“Universities are at the heart of new thinking that addresses issues from global warming and environmental degradation to changing economic realities and shifting political boundaries.
“Our academics are centre-stage as the world grapples with global-scale issues. How we, as universities, engage globally impacts on our students and academics as well as wider society.
“In keeping with the strong Pasifika flavour planned for 2012, I know we will navigate a creative and sustainable path for international education in the Asia-Pacific region and we are very much looking forward to engaging with other universities in the Pacific as part of thisof this event.”
Professor McCutcheon said he was delighted at the opportunity to host the conference and the way the university sector worked so closely with local and central government to create a compelling story for New Zealand as hosts.
“This is the same year that this country is hosting APEC, so we have a real opportunity to showcase not just our capacity in tourism and events, but also the critical thinking that is being carried out here,” he said.
“New Zealand has been ranked as the best education system in the world for preparing students for the futureby the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Educating for the Future Index and we are a world-leader in environmental and agricultural sciences. Our universities are ranked in the top 100 globally in geography, agriculture and forestry, earth and marine sciences. We have a huge amount to offer.”
The conference, which will include more than 100 exhibitors, will be held in Auckland’s new international convention centre (NZICC), due for completion next year.
