ILM Leadership & Management Programmes Underway in the Cook Islands
Cook Island Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI) have launched their new Leadership & Management programmes. The ILM qualifications are aimed at building knowledge and skills with a strong focus on workplace performance enabling Cook Islanders to hit
the ground running.
Caroline Medway-Smith, CITTI Director spoke of the high level of interest in the new ILM Leadership & Management programmes - coming from mainly the Public Sector, ‘the Certificate and Diploma programmes are full already
and they have been receiving favourable feedback from learners.’
CITTI has partnered with ILM to develop and deliver leadership programmes that are fit for industry now and in the
future. ILM programmes are designed to be simple, flexible and practical to deliver - making it easier to customise
programmes and precisely meet the needs of the learners. Shelley Tavai is one of the tutors. Shelley commented that,
’the program content is relevant to the workplace and topics covered are helpful for supervisors, leaders and managers.
It’s been expressed by students that they are learning “a lot” and “using it back at work.’’ Also, the learners are
‘’very excited that they have access to an international qualification.’’
ILM Business Development Manager, Hilary Scott-Ker is confident that the CITTI Leadership programmes will help The Cook
Islands Ministry of Education achieve their strategic goal, ‘The ILM Leadership & Management qualifications focus on team leaders, middle management through to senior leaders. Achieving an
internationally recognised qualification will ensure Cook Islanders have the necessary capabilities to meet labour
market needs and be confident that their investment will contribute to the success of their community.’ Scott-Ker also
spoke about the ILM digital credentials. ’The digital credentials are issued and verified online making it easier for individuals to demonstrate their
competencies and achievements. They are portable and transparent. We are excited that CITTI Leadership programmes will
be recipients of the new digital credentials.’
Some of the learners were asked what they would do differently back in the work place. ’Communication, team building and
breaking down some of the barriers between management and staff.’ ‘The ILM programme is already providing me with new
knowledge and skills at work.’
CITTI and City & Guilds have been working together since 2013 to help build and strengthen vocational outcomes in the Cook Islands.
