Come behind the scenes at the Auckland Medical School Open Day
Robots, science labs and medical displays will be on show at the University of Auckland’s Grafton Campus this Saturday.
The public is invited to come behind the campus’s usually closed doors as the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences
celebrates its birthday with the Grafton Campus 50th Anniversary Open Day.
Dean of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor John Fraser, says the open day is a proud moment for the faculty, and
starts a series of celebrations and events throughout 2018.
“I look forward to seeing old colleagues, students, and families enjoy our open day, I know there will be plenty on
display for all ages and interests.”
Deputy Dean, Distinguished Professor Ian Reid was part of just the fifth intake of students when he started his Bachelor
of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Grafton in 1972.
“As a former student I have witnessed many changes around the campus, but this is the first time we have opened the
faculty to the public for many years. I think it’s great that it gives our community, and particularly future students,
a chance to see our great world-class facilities and research.”
The day promises to be a family-friendly carnival atmosphere with entertainment, food trucks, kids’ games, medical
science activities and informative talks.
MED Talk sessions, a collection of talks covering various aspects of health and wellbeing, will also be on, as well as
20-minute clinical talks on more in-depth topics in medicine.
We are also offering exclusive behind-the-scenes tours for people to discover the campus.
The Medical School opened in 1968 and is now the University’s largest and most diverse faculty with more than 4000
students studying across our six schools, led by world-leading researchers and lecturers. The faculty now boasts some of
the world’s most
up-to-date research and laboratory facilities, having completed a $240 million redevelopment of the Grafton Campus in
2012.
The recent 2018 QS World University Rankings had our departments of Anatomy and Physiology placed 18th in the world,
reflecting the high calibre of the faculty as a whole.
