Children will benefit from employment law changes

Changes to employment legislation announced today is good news for children and educators.
Many of the changes are about lifting wages through collective barganing – and this will, in many cases, lift family incomes and reduce poverty, says NZEI Te Riu Roa National Secretary Paul Goulter.
“Wages have been too low for too long, and schools and centres will tell you of the many children whose families struggle to pay for basic needs and this adversely affects their health, wellbeing and education.
“It is time we redress the balance for all New Zealand especially some of the most vulnerable – our children.”
He says the new government has moved the balance back to workers, where it should be, after changes to legislation under the previous government had given too much power to employers - and workers had suffered.
“This has harmed working people and other families for too long in New Zealand.”
The Bill to amend the Employment Relations Act 2000 will be introduced to Parliament on Monday.
