Place-Based Learning Focus for Annual Māori and Pasifika Hui

Published: Thu 25 Jan 2018 02:47 PM
Hosts Te Taitokerau will take this year’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Hui Fono participants on a magical Far North journey to explore place-based learning. The theme Te Ao Mātauranga, Our World, Our Wisdom, invites educators to consider what is an effective learning space and how can informal and formal learning activities be blended seamlessly.
Hui Fono participants will be based at Korou Kore Marae, Ahipara, February 21-23 and organizers, Far North Adult Literacy and Far North REAP hope they will experience first-hand the principle of ako and what strong learner-centric programmes which emphasise interchangeable roles and mutual respect look like.
The learning journey includes Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga and Te Aurere where master waka carver and tribal leader Hekenukumai Busby will share insights on ocean voyaging and navigation using traditional Polynesian double hull canoes.
The annual Hui Fono is now in its eleventh year and provides a unique professional learning space for Māori and Pasifika community educators. ACE Aotearoa Professional Development Manager Analiese Robertson says the number of Māori and Pasifika attending the Hui Fono is increasing each year and ACE practitioners continue to travel from remote corners of Aotearoa to participate.
