Secondary School Achievers Receive Council Awards
Four secondary school students have been given a helping hand by the Hurunui District Council to pursue further study. Anna Bennetto from Amberley, Emma and Julia Maxwell from Cheviot, and Skyla Squires from Waipara were today presented with awards from the $10,000 2017 Secondary School Achievers fund.
The fund was set up to assist students financially each year to further their study at either secondary or tertiary level in the following year. The awards acknowledge students hard work and achievements, along with their contribution to their community. The student’s applications were selected by an independent assessment panel, and their decisions recommended to the council by the Public Services Committee.
Public Services Committee Chair, Fiona Harris, says the Secondary School Achievers Awards are a highlight of the council year.
"Being able to recognise our outstanding students with these awards on behalf of our Hurunui community is a real privilege. It is a delight to see our council contributing to the future of our district by supporting these young achievers on their way to further education."
Past recipients have used the funds for boarding or tuition fees, scholarship travel expenses, purchases of text books and electronic equipment. This year’s awards will be used towards funding the recipients’ studies in performing arts, land and property management, finance and commerce at various tertiary institutions around the district.
Mayor Dalley says it is always a pleasure to shake the hands of the district’s young achievers and present the awards, knowing it will make a contribution to their futures.
“The awards have been presented annually since 2000 and have a proud history of encouraging innovation and excellence in our district’s students. The fact the council can contribute financially to the development of our secondary school achievers through further study is quite special to me.” The four recipients received their certificate and letter from Mayor Dalley at the awards ceremony. The grants will be distributed to the successful applicants before their studies commence next year
