More than 3,200 students cap off studies in Spring graduation
Record numbers of students will receive qualifications in this year’s University of Auckland Spring graduation.
Some 3,240 students will graduate in person or in absentia, an increase of around 80 on last year’s number.
More than 2,260 students have applied to graduate in person at one of four ceremonies to be held at the Aotea Centre on Tuesday 26 September. Another 980 students will graduate in absentia.
The Spring graduation events follow the 10 ceremonies held to recognise the academic achievements of nearly 4,500 students at the University’s Autumn graduation in May.
The oldest of this year’s Spring graduands is 81 and the youngest are three students aged 20. The numbers include 402 Māori and Pacific students, up from 356 last Spring. There are 169 doctoral students.
Of the 94 people gaining more than one qualification on the day, 90 are gaining two, and four people are gaining three.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart McCutcheon says: “We congratulate all of our Spring graduands and are delighted to celebrate with them their many achievements, both in the classroom and beyond.
"The qualifications our graduates have earned will add real value to their lives, and to those of their families and the wider community. We are proud to have played a part in their success.”
The traditional graduation procession will depart from the University of Auckland Pavilion, on Old Government House grounds, at 9.30am and proceed down Bowen Avenue, Victoria Street East, and up Queen Street to the Aotea Centre where the graduation ceremonies will take place from 10.30am.
Speakers at the ceremonies are Hēmi Rolleston, General Manager Sectors, Māori and Economy Programmes, Callaghan Innovation; Sir Ken Stevens, Founder and Executive Chairman, Glidepath; Michael Stiassny, Partner, KordaMentha; and inspirational recent graduate Josh Foreman.
