Award recognises volunteers outstanding commitment to children’s education
Hamilton local Wayne Goodwin was recently presented with an Outstanding Community Service Award from Life Education
Trust.
Wayne, a Mainfreight truck driver, was given the national award for his dedication to the charity who work to educate
and inspire generations to embrace positive choices for a healthy mind and body. The award Wayne received recognises his
commitment as a volunteer over many years.
Wayne has been moving Life Education’s mobile classroom in his own time, and at his own cost for the Hamilton Trust for
the last 13 years. His role involves travelling at early hours of the morning and travel to rural schools, covering a
wide area of Waikato as he works around his own work schedule.
“We are very fortunate to have Wayne on-board as the Trust have no alternative means of moving the classroom. It is a
major contribution over many years” said Life Education Trust Chief Executive John O’Connell.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our work across the country and our Volunteer Recognition Awards are a way that we can
recognise and celebrate these individuals’ contribution” said O’Connell.
In a given year, volunteer Trustees give 25,000 hours of their time to Life Education and make it possible for 250,000
children from 1,500 schools to take part nationwide.
Wayne is a typical example of volunteers supporting Life Education’s work with children. In 2016 Wayne moved the
Hamilton classroom to 27 different schools, enabling 6,000 children to take part in lessons with Life Education’s
specialist health teacher.
2017 marks a 10-year partnership between Mainfreight and Life Education. Mainfreight give ongoing support to Life
Education and volunteer truck drivers like Wayne, keep mobile classrooms moving from school to school to support
children’s education throughout New Zealand.
