WelTec Welcomes Week of Engineering
From Vex Robotics to 3D printing, CNC machining, liquefaction modelling and land contour profiling, Wellingtonians will
have the chance to explore it all for free at the Wellington Week of Engineering Expo being held at Te Papa on Saturday
5 August.
The Engineering Expo is part of the nation-wide Week of Engineering supported by the Institution of Professional
Engineers NZ and many local and national engineering companies including Beca and Opus.
“The Week of Engineering is a great initiative that we are pleased to support. Having the opportunity to explain to
potential students what a career in engineering can offer is our main focus,” says Graham Carson Head of Engineering at
WelTec and Whitireia.
With more than 270 students currently studying at diploma, degree and graduate diploma level WelTec is committed to
training the next generation of engineers.
“There is a skills shortage for people with applied engineering skills. We want to do more particularly with younger
people to get the message out that engineering has great career prospects and can make a significant difference in so
many different ways to our daily lives and the environment in which we live and work,” says Mr Carson. “I really
encourage people to come along on Saturday and experience some fun engineering activities, to meet our tutors and some
of our graduates who are now working as engineers.”
WelTec will be at Te Papa on Saturday promoting engineering and our interactive displays will cover the three
engineering disciplines taught at WelTec – civil, mechanical and electrical. We will also have information on our
Graduate Diplomas which have been developed in response to industry demand. These cover Water and Waste Water,
Mechatronics and Structures. WelTec is introducing a further Graduate Diploma qualification in Building Services which
covers the design and infrastructure such as heating and ventilation required in buildings. This new qualification will
be available in March 2018.
