MEDIA RELEASE 29 MARCH
School’s in for summer at Te Kura
Te Kura had a big increase in student enrolment for this year’s summer school. The distance education provider had 746 students enrol for summer school 2016/2017, up from 201 enrolments for summer school 2015/2016.
Summer school gives students the opportunity to earn additional credits or specific internal standards to get into a tertiary course, training, employment or a higher level of NCEA.
Te Kura Chief Executive Mike Hollings says, “Our students come from all walks of life with diverse interests, needs and goals. Summer school offers yet more flexibility for our learners, and we are really pleased to see it being taken up.
“Many of the students have come from another school and enrolled with the intention of completing a qualification. This year, 206 students achieved NCEA Level 3 and/or University Entrance with their summer school results. Other students are getting started on the school year ahead. Twenty per cent of the summer school students are continuing their enrolment with us.”
There were 48 subjects available to enrol in via Te Kura summer school. This year, students were supported by Te Kura’s new Hub, which was launched on 16 January. The Hub is a new service that has been set up to help students, whanau and schools with online learning.
Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand’s state distance education provider, offering personalised learning programmes to students from early childhood to Year 13.
