Health Industry Big Day Out connects employers and students
Today, the Careers New Zealand Health Industry Big Day Out, in partnership with Te Whānau o Waipareira, will give 100 students an opportunity to see different aspects of the health industry in action, connect with employers and discover pathways into the industry in West Auckland.
The Health Industry Big Day Out gives young people a taste of the wealth of career pathways available in the health sector. This is important as the need for health care services increases as our population grows older.
“Health is one of the nationally significant industries that have been identified as being key to New Zealand’s economic growth. Careers in health also rest on some of the government’s prioritised subjects – science and technology in particular,” says Careers New Zealand Chief Executive Keith Marshall.
The event is held in partnership with Te Whānau o Waipareira, a Māori health organisation that brings together health, social justice and education for Whānau Ora.
Students have the chance to see, learn and hear from a wide variety of health industry professionals from Sport Waitakere’s Healthy Families, The Fono Health and Social Services, and Waitemata District Health Board – including dietitians, nurses, paramedics and police support who will discuss mental and physical health.
Representatives from Unitec Waitakere will be educating students about career pathways into nursing, osteopathy, medical imaging, youth development and sport. The Oceania Career Academy will also be on hand to speak about mentoring and apprenticeship opportunities in the health industry for Māori and Pasifika youth.
“The Industry Big Day Out is an important part of the Careers New Zealand education-to-employment strategy. It’s our aim to have every student who attends today’s event leaving inspired, educated and well informed about the many opportunities for work and study in the health sector,” says Careers New Zealand Initiatives Advisor Ana Hau.
Industry Big Day Out is a Careers New Zealand national initiative connecting employers, industry and educators to provide students an insight into the real world of work and the range of pathways available within key industry sectors.
