Due to the future development of the Northern Link Motorway Te Puna Kindergarten will be relocated and is currently in
the first stages of this process with the NZTA. As part of the relocation procedure NZTA conducted a valuation of the
building that included a general drug test within the property. This is standard procedure.
The drug analysis report showed low levels of methamphetamine were detected on some surfaces in the Kindergarten and
that the drug may have been smoked onsite.
“I was shocked and extremely concerned when hearing this news. Our first priority is the health and safety of our
children and staff, therefore the Kindergarten will be closed while an extensive investigation is carried out”, says
Inspired Kindergartens Principal Peter Monteith.
Key Stakeholders including the Police, Ministry of Education, Health Professionals, NZEI and a Drug Detection Agency
have been notified and are an integral part of the ongoing investigation.
Analysis of the initial report shows that while the amount of the drug detected was very low and would not impact on the
health or safety of any of the occupants of the building further investigation is required.
An independent more detailed test was conducted Monday afternoon which will identify specifically where the substance
was used and to what degree. We are working closely with all families and staff during this time.
