New Leader Aims to Get More People into Education
Gus Gilmore starts as CE of MIT
Helping get more people in South Auckland into great jobs is the key focus for Gus Gilmore, who starts his tenure as Chief Executive of Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) this week.
With an in-depth understanding of the community, including experience at a major South Auckland employer and a leader in the tertiary education sector, Gilmore is uniquely positioned to lead the Institute.
Gilmore believes improving education and employment outcomes is crucial, especially for Māori and Pasifika people.
“We need to work with the communities in South Auckland, and in particular with Māori and Pasifika groups, to engage more people in education and help to get them into great jobs,” he says.
“As the largest education provider for Pasifika people and for the South Auckland region, MIT plays an essential role in ensuring a better future for generations to come.”
Most recently, Gilmore served as Deputy Chief Executive of the Tertiary Education Commission where he has been at the forefront of redesigning the funding framework for the tertiary sector and improving sector performance.
Gilmore has also had more than two decades at Air New Zealand, including a time in charge of Air New Zealand’s international operations at Auckland Airport.
Gilmore will be officially welcomed to MIT during this week, with a series of formal pōwhiri and Pasifika community functions.
Established in 1970, Manukau Institute of Technology is one of the largest providers of technical, vocational and professional education in New Zealand, and offers more than 190 programmes across seven faculties.
