Wattie’s Cans for Good - collect, create, educate and donate

12 August 2016

Media Release

Wattie’s Cans for Good - collect, create, educate and donate and make a difference.

Wattie’s Cans for Good is an exciting, new, national can collection and education campaign being run by The Salvation Army in partnership with Wattie’s for New Zealand primary schools.

The campaign launched this week (12 August) calling for primary schools to register interest at www.watties.co.nz/cansforgood

Cans for Good will take place from 14-18 November with the aim to collect more than 25,000 cans to restock local foodbank shelves in the lead-up to Christmas. All cans will be given to The Salvation Army for use in local foodbanks enabling schools to make a direct and real difference to those in need in their local community. Cans collected by schools will be matched by Wattie’s.

The initiative goes beyond other fundraisers as it will combine charity collection activity with a creative competition and a set of teacher based resource sheets which are designed to engage children and teachers, in a fun, team-based giving and learning experience.

“We are hoping primary schools around the country will get behind Wattie’s Cans for Good. It’s a great way to make a difference to vulnerable families and individuals in their community who need food assistance to deal with New Zealand’s rapidly rising living costs,” says Salvation Army Territorial Public Relations Director Shane Chisholm.

For over 23 years Wattie’s has been a key partner with The Salvation Army providing cans to restock foodbank shelves before the high demand Christmas period.

“We’re really excited about this new initiative and the role we can play at a community level combining charitable donations with a creative and fun set of activities for primary school children,” says Tina Wong, Communications Manager for Heinz Wattie's.

Last year The Salvation Army provided more than 55,000 food parcels to help Kiwis in need get back on their feet.
