Partnership serves up a great opportunity for students
Local residents will be able to sample a special Speights Ale House menu served by Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP)
hospitality students over two weeks, thanks to a new community partnership.
TPP has teamed-up with Greymouth Speights Ale House for this year’s practical component of the Food and Beverage Service
for Cafes and Restaurants programme.
Tutor Jennifer Hoby says the opportunity to team-up with Greymouth Speights Ale House is a fantastic outcome for the
students.
“You can practise all you like in role-play situations, but there’s nothing like getting that experience in a real-life
situation. We are incredibly grateful to the local Speights Ale House for offering us the use of the function room for
our students this year.
“TPP’s Food and Beverage programme aims to prepare students to walk straight into a job with all the skills needed to
hit the ground running. If they have done the training, employers know they are hiring someone who doesn’t need to be
taught the basics and can get to work from day one. That means we need to teach students in real situations so they know
what to expect,” says Jen.
Greymouth Speights Ale House General Manager Dean Thomas says "a large number of the Speights Ale House staff are
Polytechnic graduates, including myself, so it made perfect sense to foster an opportunity where the students can
further develop their hospitality skills and use them in industry.
“Over eight nights local students will run their own restaurant out of our function room with a three course menu that
includes Speights Ale House signature dishes. We see this as a great way for local business to partner-up and provide a
unique experience on the Coast. Book with us to ensure you secure a table."
Tables are available for booking now through Speights Ale House for a three-course service on 1 - 4 August and again on
8 – 11 August.
