Schools Fundraise for Variety Trillian Bash
South Island kids donate to kids in need
Teachers at Brightwater and Wakefield Schools used the Variety Trillian Bash to teach their pupils about children in need this week, and help them raise funds to help disadvantaged New Zealand kids.
Brightwater School principal Gerald Baldwin handed a cheque for $548 to event MC Mark Wright, money his 300 pupils had raised, and Peter Verstappen at Wakefield School followed that with an over $200 cheque.
At each school the Bashers explained what the charity is all about, and told the children that other kids just like them had helped raise over 15 million dollars since the Bash began, all to help other Kiwi kids who need a hand-up.
Before leaving, the Bash crews showed the children over their vehicles – which range from a double-ended 1958 Bedford bus, to a 1981 fire truck dressed as a fighter jet and run by Christchurch airport, to a Ford Falcon dressed as Thunderbirds 2 from the television series.
Teams handed out giveaways, but there was a very special pack at Wakefield for young Hunter Grooby, who doesn’t let cerebral palsy mask his cheeky sense of humour, and who had immediately won over Auckland’s Tiki Girls team – with Elmo aboard – and the tough guys of Tauranga’s NYPD, who gave the Hunter a special bag of goodies before the crews pulled out for Murchison School.
West Coast rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Murchison Area School, where magician Super Hubert performed a show before the convoy moved on to Blackball for the night.
The Variety Trillian Bash breakfasts at Grey Main School from 8am to 9am, where mayor Tony Kokshoom will farewll the fundraising road train, which then splits into two groups to visit local schools before crossing Arthur’s Pass en route to Methven.
