Largest cohort graduate with Whanau Ora Diploma

Sixteen students – the largest group to date – graduated today with a Diploma in Whanau Ora.

The two-year Waipareira-designed diploma course has already graduated 12 students over the past 18 months.

The new cohort – from Waipareira, Te Ha Oranga o Ngati Whatua and Waikato’s Te Kohao Health - were presented with their parchments by MP Peeni Henare.

“I’m honoured to present the graduates with their Whanau Ora Diplomas, and they should all feel very proud of their achievements,” the Tamaki Makaurau MP said.

Acquiring a tohu through the Whānau Ora Diploma allows the kaimahi acknowledgement for the work they do for and in the community.

Waipareira rolled out the Whanau Ora Diploma – which carries a Level 5 Certificate - as a pilot in September 2012.

Witeri Williams, Director of Wai-Educate, said there is a real need for the Whanau Ora Diploma to continue.

“A number of work places have workers who didn’t have the opportunities to acquire the qualifications on paper but have all the experience in the world,” Witeri said.

“The Whanau Ora Diploma combines that experience with specific training to give them a recognised Level 5 Diploma.”

The Whanau Ora Diploma is supported by workforce development funders, such as the Ministry of Health (MPDS).
