Otago Polytechnic launches Distinguished Alumni Awards

Otago Polytechnic launches Distinguished Alumni Awards to celebrate former students’ success

“If you know someone who has studied at Otago Polytechnic, and made a major contribution in their profession, or in the world of business, art, sport or the community, we would love to hear about them.”

Otago Polytechnic Chief Executive Phil Ker is calling for nominations for the institution’s inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards, recognising the ongoing accomplishments of its former students.

The Awards are being launched as part of the Polytechnic’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and Ker says he hopes they will become an ongoing tradition.

“Otago Polytechnic’s ethos has always been to create independent learners who can make a difference in their professional lives and to their communities. I can’t think of a better time than Otago Polytechnic’s 50th birthday year to acknowledge and celebrate alumni who have gone on to make a significant contribution to society and the wellbeing of others,” Ker says.

Recipients will be selected on the basis of:
- Pre-eminence in their chosen field
- Outstanding contributions to the community at large
- Outstanding professional or voluntary service
- Outstanding achievements in business
- Outstanding achievements in the fine, performing or applied arts
- Outstanding achievements in team or individual sport to national representative level

At least 10 Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented at an Alumni Function on Friday 8 April, and it is envisaged that up to three awards will be bestowed annually from 2017 onwards.

Nominations for the Otago Polytechnic Distinguished Alumni awards close on 29 February.
