The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme culminated in the Wellington Regional Awards last night, with Kiwi Pride,
the team from St Mary’s College taking out the Wellington YES Company of the Year Award. Kiwi Pride produced a celebrity
recipe book with over 50 well-known New Zealanders contributing their favourite recipes to the publication, which was
produced to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Wellington. Jodie Kerr, Anna Te, Isabella White, Gemma Englert,
Bri Davey and Rachael Cox were not only consistent performers throughout the academic year, they were stars in all
aspects of the competition.
Wellington Regional Coordinator for the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, Gavin Miller stated that “Kiwi Pride
mastered so many aspects of their start up business that they were always going to be front runners for the YES Company
of the Year. They not only had to coordinate contributions from literally dozens of well-known New Zealand identities,
they also raised capital to fund production, took the design process in-house and even secured a distribution and sales
channel deal with a retail chain. They did this while juggling the rest of the school work and personal lives along the
way.
What struck me is that they seemed to glide over obstacles and never wavered in their goal of getting this book to
market.”
Second prize in the Wellington YES Company of the Year went to Liquid Life, from Hutt Valley High School for their work
on their marine rescue device development, and third place went to Hydro from Hutt International Boys School with their
cordial product that raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer. Gavin said, “Both of these teams were very high
performers and even though we can only have one Regional Champion, it was a very close race to the title. In fact only
1.2 percentage marks separated first from third place this year – a testament to how close these two teams came to
taking the title.

3rd PLACE: Hydro, Hutt International Boys School

Excellence in Operations: Kiwi Pride, St Mary’s College
Excellence in Financial Management: Wellington Now, Hutt Valley High School
Award for Business Commitment: Moon Dumplings, Hutt Valley High School
