Creative Tech Student Wins Design Competition
Duke Apelinga, a second year Bachelor of Creative Technologies student who is majoring in graphic design has taken out the top award in a design competition run by the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec).
Students were invited to provide a design for WelTec’s online learning environment by developing five navigation icons which would allow students to access the learning system. The design had to be appealing to students and reflect an understanding of tikanga Maori.
The competition attracted 21 entries and 1000 likes on Facebook.
The award winner Duke Apelinga says, “The general aesthetic of my design is to keep it minimal and modern that depicts the balance between informative and decorative.”
Teriu Lemon, WelTec’s Head of Creative Industries says, “Experiences like this are great for students. Working on a real brief for a client provides students with the type of experience they will need before they head off to the world of work.
“We encourage our students to try out their newly acquired skills at every opportunity. Applied, practical training very much reflects our approach to teaching on the Bachelor of Creative Technologies and this shows in the quality and work-readiness of our graduates.”
