Shanghai Scholarship Students to Visit

Shanghai Scholarship Students to Visit

Dunedin (Tuesday, 30 June 2015) – Learning about Dunedin businesses will be the main focus for a group of Shanghai scholarship students visiting Dunedin in July.

This is the second year Shanghai scholarship students have visited the city. This initiative follows an invitation from Mayor of Dunedin Dave Cull to the Mayor of Shanghai during a visit to the Chinese city in 2013.

Ten students from four universities and a leader will arrive in Dunedin on 5 July for a two week programme.

Dunedin City Council Business Development Advisor Margo Reid says, “The main purpose of this year’s visit is to give students an idea of how Dunedin businesses operate. We are very grateful to the Dunedin businesses which have agreed to have the students as interns, which will be a really valuable experience for them.

The students will be formally welcomed by Ōtākou Marae representatives and Mr Cull on 6 July and they will receive certificates from him at the end of their stay.

Ms Reid says the students will also take business English language classes and spend an afternoon on each of the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic campuses. On 11 and 12 July, they will take a sightseeing tour, which will include visits to Larnach Castle, Royal Albatross colony and a Monarch wildlife cruise.

All students are paying for their return air travel to Dunedin, but once on the ground all costs will be met by the DCC, the University and the Polytechnic during the two week stay.

A group of 14 secondary students from sister schools in Shanghai will visit Dunedin in August as the second part of the scholarship programme.
