MBIE to fund Dunedin Study

MBIE to fund Dunedin Study

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment announced today that base funding of $641,000 will be provided to the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study in 2015/16.

“The Dunedin Study is a detailed, long-term study of human health, development and behaviour which is in its fifth decade,” says Paul Stocks, MBIE’s Deputy Chief Executive for Science, Skills and Innovation.

“This Study has achieved international recognition because of the high calibre of its research, the significance of its ground-breaking findings, the length of time it has been running, and the high retention rate of its participants. It provides value well beyond New Zealand.

“The Dunedin Study’s long-term nature and its broad coverage across a range of sectors – health, social, education and justice – mean it doesn’t easily fit within existing funding criteria.

“We’re very pleased that we are able to contribute a base level of funding for the Dunedin Study this year, while longer-term funding arrangements are explored.”

The Dunedin Study has followed the lives of 1,037 babies born between 1 April 1972 and 31 March 1973 at Queen Mary Maternity Hospital in Dunedin since their birth. It is led by Professor Richie Poulton of Otago University’s Psychology Department.
