Thumbs up for Careers New Zealand’s work
The
benefits of good careers education have been highlighted in
a new Education Review Office report released today which
closely examines the work of ten schools recognised as
excelling in their careers work.
Its findings have been welcomed by Careers New Zealand, which supported ERO with the evaluation report.
“We are passionate that good career guidance helps young people make good learning and work choices and that helps grow a skilled workforce,” Careers New Zealand Chief Executive Keith Marshall said today.
“Part of our role is to provide schools with tools and resources to help them with their career guidance role. We are heartened that ERO’s report finds that we are on the right track.”
Today’s report says schools with the most successful careers education and guidance had worked with Careers New Zealand and used its Career Education Benchmarks [1] to review current practice and improve their provision for students.
“We developed those benchmarks with schools and with CATE, the professional body representing careers and transition educators to encourage good practice,” Mr Marshall said.
“The findings in today’s report clearly shows us the currency, relevancy, accuracy and value of this resource.”
Mr Marshall paid tribute to the many teachers throughout the country who worked hard to ensure their students were well prepared for their future post-school.
“Society and industry is changing rapidly and it is a challenge to keep abreast of those changes to ensure that young people are prepared for the world of work. It’s great to see a practical tool like our career benchmarks having such a positive effect for schools.”
