New UCOL Trades Scholarship
A new student scholarship in recognition and acknowledgement of outgoing UCOL Chief Executive Paul McElroy’s twenty years contribution in the job has been approved by UCOL Council.
UCOL Chair Malcolm Inglis said Paul always has students’ interests at heart and his leadership and approach to managing UCOL reflects this. “It is a wonderful tribute to his contribution to UCOL that a scholarship is created, and in the area of trades which is a personal interest of Paul’s. The UCOL Council wishes Paul and his family all the very best for his retirement and life after UCOL.”
Available from 2015, the scholarship is for students who want a career in trades, and are facing financial hardship and/or exceptional challenging circumstances. The Scholarship will be used as a contribution towards their UCOL course fees.
Eligible trades based programmes include carpentry and joinery, electrical, furniture design and making, mechanical engineering, automotive, beauty and hairdressing, as well as hospitality and chef training.
The total value of the Scholarship is up to $3,000 and may be awarded and shared by two students each year. Applicants must be enrolled in and attending a Trades programme at any UCOL site, with preference given to applicants in full time UCOL study. The Scholarship will be funded from UCOL’s commercial revenue streams.
Mr McElroy said he is honoured to have a scholarship for trades students in his name. “I have enjoyed my time at UCOL and working with some great people who are dedicated to helping students succeed. I am looking forward to spending more time with family and wish the institution well.”
The Scholarship will be awarded annually from 2015 and will have a life of four years.
