Design and Arts Degree approved

The new Bachelor of Design and Arts to be taught at Whanganui UCOL next year has been approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Executive Dean of Humanities and Business at UCOL, Steve Sorsby, said “this is a major step forward and affirmation of all the hard work for those people who put their efforts and thoughts into creating this new degree. “Enrolments are now a key focus – we are keen to get off to a good start and already have six people who have applied. The start date for the proposed degree is 9 March 2015. “I strongly encourage people who are interested to come and talk with us and find out more. The campus re-opens on 7 January and staff would love to take enrolments. Interested people can visit the UCOL Information Centre on Rutland Street or phone Wanganui campus on 965 3800.”

Students can choose from three majors – visual arts, textiles/fashion design or graphic design. A broad range of electives within those majors are also on offer, such as kiln formed glass, illustration, animation, raranga weaving and textile print.

Employment opportunities for Bachelor of Design and Arts graduates are exciting and diverse, and depending on the students chosen major could include: graphic designer, practicing artist, fashion designer, gallery curator, videographer, animator, marketing career, movie industry careers, television careers, product design, , costume design, theatre and prop design, photographer, art or design administration and management, secondary and tertiary teaching.

Background

Visual Arts Major
Students studying the Visual Arts Major will experience an exciting multi-media studio environment delivered by professional artists successful in their own art practice.

Learning is undertaken within spacious warehouses repurposed as comfortable and contemporary art studios equipped with both new technologies and time-honoured traditional art-making facilities. The Design and Arts facility is situated within the historic Whanganui old town and overlooks the beautiful and culturally significant Whanganui River.

Visual Arts at the Whanganui School of Design encompasses the best of contemporary arts practice, with opportunities for students to experience a wide range of media including: sculpture, painting, printmaking, video, animation, glass casting, drawing, illustration and photography.

Students also get the opportunity to work with a real client to undertake an Intern Project.

Textiles/Fashion Design Major
Students studying the Textiles/Fashion Major will learn about a range of creative opportunities for students with an interest in textiles, fashion and related art and design practices. Learning will be delivered by fashion and design experts with an understanding of industry and the possibilities for textiles/fashion design in the 21st century.

Learning is undertaken within spacious warehouses repurposed as comfortable and contemporary fashion studios equipped with industry standard technology and specialist labs designed to allow students a wide range of creative outcomes. The Design and Arts facility is situated within the historic Whanganui old town and overlooks the beautiful and culturally significant Whanganui River.

Textiles/Fashion at the Whanganui School of Design encompasses the best of industry practice and cutting edge art and design, with opportunities for students to experience a wide range of media including: draping and construction, pattern making, 3D Modelling, textile printing, glass casting, illustration, drawing, video, animation and photography.

Students also get the opportunity to work with a real client to undertake an Intern Project.

Graphic Design Major
Students studying the Graphic Design Major will experience a cutting edge, multi-media design studio environment delivered by designers with significant industry experience, and successful design careers.

Learning is undertaken within spacious warehouses repurposed as comfortable and contemporary design studios equipped with high-spec Mac computers with the very best in new software’s and related technologies. The Design and Arts facility is situated within the historic Whanganui old town and overlooks the beautiful and culturally significant Whanganui River.

Graphic Design at the Whanganui School of Design encompasses the best of industry practice and cutting edge art and design, with opportunities for students to experience a wide range of media including: illustration, typography, printmaking, web, 3D modelling, animation, drawing, video, animation and photography.

Students also get the opportunity to work with a real client to undertake an Intern Project.
