Media Release from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa – One United Wānanga

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, is strategically realigning its organisation that will see its two legal entities, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Open Wānanga Ltd become one united Wānanga.

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Te Taiurungi (CEO) Jim Mather said although the Wānanga had operated as two legal entities since 2000 it is now the right time to consolidate as one wānanga.

“We feel confident about our future as we combine Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Open Wānanga Ltd as one united Wānanga and believe that our new structure will make us a stronger tertiary provider in a rapidly changing funding environment."

The progressive redesign, entitled “Te Raumairanga”, aims to further enhance our present structure and systems and to continue to improve the services we deliver to the tens of thousands of students.

The benefits of “Te Raumairanga” include collective sustainability as we better align resources and strengthen teams, whilst providing clear pathways and progression options for both kaimahi (employees) and tauira (students).

Mr. Mather would not be making comment as to how many roles could be reduced other than to say the realignment was “not a cost cutting exercise."

“There will be new areas of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa which will receive more strategic focus and we expect growth. But there will also be areas where we anticipate change and this may result in a reduction in roles."

The recruitment and appointment of deputy chief executive officer John Whaanga and eight other executive directors which started in March was part of phase one of the redesign and Mr. Mather was delighted the very best available candidates throughout Aotearoa were now all on board to take the Wānanga to the next level.

Last week the Wānanga began the next phase of Te Raumairanga that involves executives presenting the new designs of their teams to kaimahi from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Open Wānanga Ltd.

The process started with meetings for Marketing and Finance teams and will be followed by other teams with the aim of completing consultation with all staff before the end of the year

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is the country’s second largest tertiary institution and the largest Māori organisation in Aotearoa. We employ more than 1,400 kaimahi to serve almost 32,000 tauria across the country, half of whom are Māori.

Te Raumairanga means the lifting up of, and the raising of aspirational and inspirational virtues of our organisation to new heights. It is a progressive redesign of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, to further enhance our present structure and systems and to continue to improve the services we deliver to the tens of thousands of tauira.
