Government gets arrogant and reckless over charter schools

NZEI Te Riu Roa National President Judith Nowotarski says she’s flabbergasted that the government is throwing more money at its woeful charter school experiment a week before the election and just days after revelations of mismanagement at a charter school in Northland.

"This is the height of arrogance and shows that the government is prepared to risk children’s education to pursue its extreme ideology, she said.

"It is reckless of the government to sign contracts for new charter schools when all opposition parties have made it clear that charter schools will be scrapped if there is a change of government. Trying to force these schools through a week before the election is scandalous."

"The government hasn’t even completed its own evaluation of the four charter schools that opened in January and yet it is throwing another $15.5 million in order to open four new ones."

"This shows just how committed it is to embedding this dangerous type of schooling into our education system and how far the Act Party’s far right agenda has permeated into this government’s policies."
