Hairdressing Students Blown Away By Competition Success
NorthTec hairdressing students showed what they were made of when they took out the top four places at a Northland-wide
competition.
The contest brought out the best in students Rachel Wano, Verna Flavell, Roishean Pasco and Jena Huntington. With Rachel
leading the way in first place, the NorthTec girls swept the board in the Pre-Apprentice section. Verna placed second,
with Roishean and Jena following in third and fourth place respectively.
The regional competition, organised by the New Zealand Association of Registered Hair Stylists, gave each competitor 40
minutes to create a hairstyle inspired by current industry or fashion trends.
The Pre-Apprentices, who must be signed to a training provider and have spent less than one year in training, had to
produce a “hair-up” or blow-wave style. The finished look on which they were judged was completed by the model’s make up
and clothing.
NorthTec hairdressing tutor, Jan Dawson, said: “We are extremely proud of our students who got the top four places in
this prestigious competition. They did fantastically well, especially when compared to the work produced by the senior
section.
“They had clearly done their homework when researching the event, and I received many comments from people in the
industry about the level of skill the NorthTec students displayed.”
Prior to the competition, the students had to research current hair styles and trends, and work with NorthTec beauty
tutor Elizabeth Halvorson, who did the models’ make-up on the big day. They also chose a model each and selected
clothing, accessories and shoes to compete their overall look.
Despite the very long day – which saw the students take to the floor at 7.30am to start preparation, then wait until
6.30pm for the judging – the entire NorthTec team were left “buzzing” at the result.
Jan said: “We are so proud of each and every one of the students, and the hard work they put in. This was great exposure
for them within the local industry and should give them a huge boost in terms of developing their careers in
hairdressing.”
