More recognition needed for Homebased Early Childhood Educators and Nannies
The New Zealand Homebased ECE Association says the great contribution that homebased educators and nannies make to homes
and communities throughout New Zealand should be recognised and celebrated.
It’s AGM and Conference are being held in Wellington from Friday 5 to Sunday September 7, and delegates from homebased
and other services across New Zealand are attending to network, listen to expert speakers, and enjoy an awards ceremony.
Homebased childcare, where educators provide childcare in their own homes for young children, is the fastest-growing ECE
sector and the preferred form of childcare and education for over 19,000 children aged 0-5. The conference is growing in
popularity each year.
As part of the awards evening on Saturday September 6, the award for New Zealand Homebased Educator or Nanny of the
Year, sponsored by Rothbury Insurance Brokers, will be presented. The winner will receive a cash prize and trophy.
“This event is an important opportunity for people involved in homebased childcare to come together, share their
experiences and enjoy an opportunity to make connections,” says Evan Kidd, Acting Chairperson of the Homebased ECE Association. “It’s also a chance for us to celebrate all the great work that goes on across New Zealand in the homebased sector, and
the unique service that more and more children are benefiting from.”

Keynote speakers for the Conference include David Spraggs, a well-known Early Childhood Education Consultant from
Gisborne specialising in professional development and science in ECE. Manu Faaea-Semeatu, who works with Core Education
in Auckland, is also speaking. Manu has been involved in creating submissions for various policy documents such as the
Pasifika Education Plan for the Ministry of Education, the Pacific Languages Framework for the Ministry of Pacific
Island Affairs and the Pasifika Strategy for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
