Media Release: Beca Engineering Day
MEDIA RELEASE
Students get excited about careers in engineering, planning and architecture.
15 August 2014
As part of Western Bay @ Work, 64 Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty secondary school students took part the annual Beca Engineering Day, during which they were given valuable insights into the various career and training opportunities within engineering, planning and architecture.
Organised by Priority One’s Instep programme, the students heard from graduates about their personal experience and journey from tertiary through to their current roles. Through a site visit to the Port of Tauranga, the students were able to view firsthand the significant and valuable impact engineers, planners and architects work in the areas of transport, structures, planning, geotechnical, civil, architectural, mechanical/electrical and project management.
Gavin Frost, Manager of Beca Tauranga said “It was great to see such strong interest from the students, keen to find out more about a career in one of these exciting fields. There are many opportunities locally for new graduates and the young Beca professionals were able to share their experiences to help the students make those important decisions about their future careers.”
A fun problem solving activity provided the students with the opportunity to work in groups and to test their skills in the design and construction of a model bridge. The results were then judged by Beca graduates on their strength and architectural design.
Lyn Parlane, Priority One’s Instep Manager said “This is the seventh year we have collaborated with Beca Tauranga to organise this unique event for our local secondary schools. Over the years I have seen a marked increase in the number of students wanting to participate in the Beca Engineering Day, with some of these students now employed locally in these fields.”
