UCOL student photographer is top shot

Third Year UCOL Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging student Amy Fowler shot her way to two titles at the annual Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards this week.

Amy was named the Student Photographer of the Year for the second year in a row and became the first person to do so, in the history of the prestigious event.

It is the 11th year in succession that a UCOL student has claimed the student title at the NZ Institute of Professional Photography’s annual gathering.

Amy was one of 36 Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging (BAVI) and Diploma Photographic Imaging students who submitted entries to the hotly contested print competitions to vie for gold, silver and bronze awards.

Of the 68 awards in the Student Category, UCOL students claimed 40 of them. The remaining 28 awards were shared by the five other photography institutions.

The students’ winning tally: 22 Bronze, seven Silvers, seven Silvers with Distinction, three Golds, of which Amy Fowler won two; and one Gold with Distinction (Layla Papworth).

Industry and Institute awards were conferred at a Gala Dinner last night.

UCOL Lecturer and Grand Master of the NZ Institute of Professional Photography Kaye Davis, was named Creative Photographer of the Year for the second consecutive year. Her fellow Lecturers ascended the NZIPP qualifications ladder with Ian Rotherham gaining a Bar to his Masters, and Michael Watson gaining his Associateship.

Twenty three UCOL students and teaching staff travelled to Rotorua to assist during the print judging sessions and attend the NZIPP conference that ran in conjunction.
