Principals’ Welcome Fresh Focus for Education
The New Zealand Principals’ Federation (NZPF) has welcomed the suite of policies released by Labour this weekend, providing a fresh focus on children, teachers and leadership.
‘Principals across the country will be heartened by the new direction that the Labour party is presenting with these policy announcements,’ said Paul Drummond, spokesperson for the New Zealand Principals’ Federation (NZPF).
‘The policies reflect a party that has confidence in the profession to apply resource in ways that can be most effective for children’s learning and thus build a strong platform for the nation’s future,’ said Drummond.
Policies that guarantee funding meets inflation and population growth, that establish a principal leadership centre, lift the standard of entry to teacher training, take the focus off national standards and reduce class sizes have been warmly welcomed by the profession as a fresh way forward, placing the child and their learning front and centre.
‘The profession has been given renewed confidence with these announcements,’ said Drummond.
‘By unshackling us from the compliance burden of national standards and their focus on competition between schools, these policies will permit us to pursue the rich and broad curriculum which we know our children need to succeed in the twenty-first century,’ he said.
